Rajma vs Chole vs Black Beans: What Is the Difference?
Published on October 28, 2026
Rajma, chole and black beans are three different legumes. Rajma (kidney beans) is large, soft and creamy, and thickens a gravy. Chole (chickpeas) is round, firm and nutty, and holds its shape. Black beans are small, glossy and mildly earthy. All three are a good source of plant protein and fibre, and the right one depends on the dish. Here is how they compare, and which to use when.
Rajma vs Chole vs Black Beans at a Glance
Rajma (kidney beans)
- Plant: Phaseolus vulgaris.
- Shape: large and kidney-shaped.
- Texture when cooked: soft and creamy, and it thickens a gravy.
- Taste: mild and slightly sweet.
- Cooking time (soaked, pressure cooker): about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Classic dish: rajma chawal.
Chole (chickpeas)
- Plant: Cicer arietinum.
- Shape: round and slightly irregular.
- Texture when cooked: firm and slightly grainy, and it holds its shape.
- Taste: nutty.
- Cooking time (soaked, pressure cooker): about 20 to 30 minutes.
- Classic dish: chole bhature and chana masala.
Black beans
- Plant: Phaseolus vulgaris, the same species as rajma.
- Shape: small, oval and glossy black.
- Texture when cooked: soft, but it keeps its shape.
- Taste: earthy and slightly sweet.
- Cooking time (soaked, pressure cooker): about 15 to 25 minutes.
- Classic dish: soups, burrito bowls and salads.
Times vary with the age of the beans and the hardness of your water, so test a bean before building the gravy.
Is Rajma the Same as Chole?
No. Rajma is a kidney bean and chole is a chickpea. They are different plants, with different shapes, flavours and cooking behaviour. Rajma is also not the same as black beans, although both are the common bean. Our guide Black Beans in India: Rajma, Urad or Kala Chana? explains the names in detail.
Nutrition: How Do They Compare?
For boiled beans without salt, per 100 g, the three are close. These figures are rounded ranges based on USDA FoodData Central entries. Kidney bean figures differ by variety, so use the label on your pack for exact numbers.
- Calories: rajma about 120 to 130 kcal, chole about 165 kcal, black beans about 130 kcal.
- Protein: rajma about 8 to 9.5 g, chole about 9 g, black beans about 9 g.
- Fibre: rajma about 6 to 9 g, chole about 7.5 g, black beans about 8.5 g.
- Fat: rajma and black beans under 1 g, chole about 2.5 g.
In short: protein is similar across all three, chole is the most energy-dense, and rajma and black beans are lower in fat. None is "better" for everyone. If you have a medical condition or follow a special diet, follow your doctor's or dietitian's advice.
Which Should You Cook?
Choose rajma for
- Rajma chawal and other thick, creamy gravies.
- Soups and stews where you want the beans to break down a little.
Choose chole for
- Chole bhature, chana masala and salads, since chickpeas stay firm.
- Roasting, and hummus.
Choose black beans for
- Soups, burrito bowls and salads, where you want small beans that keep their shape.
- Dishes that call for a mildly earthy flavour.
Can You Swap One for Another?
You can, with changes. Black beans work in a rajma-style curry, but the gravy will be thinner and the beans firmer. Rajma will not give the firm bite of chickpeas in chole. Adjust the cooking time to the bean, and test for softness before adding tomato or other acid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which has more protein, rajma or chole?
They are close, at roughly 9 g per 100 g boiled. The difference is small, so choose by the dish.
Is rajma or chole better for weight loss?
Neither is a weight-loss food on its own. Rajma has fewer calories and less fat per 100 g than chole, but what matters is the whole dish and your portion size.
Can I use chole instead of rajma in rajma chawal?
Yes, but it becomes a different dish: chickpeas stay firm and the gravy will not thicken the same way.
Do all three need soaking?
Soaking overnight is recommended for all three. It shortens cooking time and gives even results. See How Long to Soak and Cook Rajma.
Are black beans and rajma the same?
They are the same species, but they are different beans with different size, texture and flavour.
