Pecan vs Walnut: The Dry Fruit That Looks Like a Walnut

If you have bought a nut that looks like a walnut but tastes sweeter and softer, it was almost certainly a pecan. The two kernels share the same ridged, two-lobed shape, and they are botanical cousins, so the mix-up is easy to make. This guide explains how to tell a pecan from a walnut, how they taste, and which to use in your kitchen.

The Quick Answer

The dry fruit that looks most like a walnut is the pecan. Hold the nut in its shell and the difference is obvious:

  • Walnut: round, rough, wrinkled light-brown shell.
  • Pecan: long, oval, smooth and glossy reddish-brown shell, often with dark streaks.

Out of the shell it is harder. A pecan kernel is longer, narrower and smoother; a walnut kernel is rounder, more crinkled and more bitter.

Pecan vs Walnut, Side by Side

Where they grow

Walnuts (Juglans regia) grow across temperate Asia and Europe. In India they come almost entirely from Jammu and Kashmir, where the harvest runs from September into October. Pecans (Carya illinoinensis) are native to North America. Most of the world's pecans are grown in the United States and Mexico, and the pecans sold in India are imported. Both trees belong to the same botanical family, which is why the kernels look alike.

Shell

Walnut shells are round and rough. Thin-shelled walnuts, sold in India as kagzi, crack in your palm; harder ones need a nutcracker. Pecan shells are smooth and oval. You can often crack them by squeezing two pecans together in your hand.

Kernel

A walnut kernel is plump, deeply wrinkled and covered in a thin papery skin. A pecan kernel is flatter and longer, with neater, more regular ridges.

Taste and texture

This is the biggest difference. Walnuts taste earthy with a slight bitterness, which comes from tannins in the papery skin. Pecans are sweeter and more buttery, with almost no bitterness, and they are softer to bite. People who find walnuts too bitter often like pecans.

Names

Walnut is akhrot in Hindi and doon in Kashmiri. Pecan has no traditional Hindi or Kashmiri name, because it does not grow here; it is sold as "pecan" or "pecan nut". Our dry fruit names guide covers the rest.

Price

Pecans usually cost more than walnuts in India because they are imported. Kashmiri walnuts are grown and graded locally.

What About Nutrition?

Both are calorie-dense nuts made up mostly of fat, with some protein and fibre. The difference people usually ask about is omega-3: walnuts contain far more plant omega-3 (ALA) than pecans or almost any other nut. Pecans have less omega-3 and taste richer. A common serving of either is about 30g, a small handful. If you follow a specific diet, ask a nutritionist how much is right for you.

Can You Use Pecans Instead of Walnuts?

In most recipes, yes. They swap one-for-one by weight.

  • Baking: both work in brownies, cakes, banana bread and cookies. Pecans make the result sweeter; walnuts add a slight bitter edge that balances very sweet bakes.
  • Salads and breakfast bowls: toasted pecans are milder and sweeter; walnuts are crunchier and more savoury.
  • Chutneys and savoury dishes: stick with walnuts. Kashmiri walnut chutney (doon chetin) depends on the walnut's earthy taste, and pecans make it too sweet.
  • Pies: pecan pie needs pecans. Walnuts will work but taste noticeably different.

Toasting brings out the flavour of both. Spread the kernels on a dry pan over low heat for four to six minutes, stirring, until they smell nutty.

How to Store Pecans and Walnuts

Both nuts are high in oil, and oil goes rancid with heat, light and air. Store them the same way:

  • In the shell: a cool, dry place in a closed container keeps them for several months. In a hot, humid summer, move them to the fridge.
  • Kernels: once the pack is open, keep them in an airtight container in the fridge. Freeze them if you need them to last more than a couple of months.
  • A rancid nut smells like oil paint and tastes sharply bitter. Throw it out; cooking will not fix it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a pecan a type of walnut?

No, but they are related. Both belong to the walnut family, Juglandaceae. Pecans are a kind of hickory nut; walnuts are a different genus.

Which tastes better, pecan or walnut?

It depends on what you like. Pecans are sweeter and more buttery. Walnuts are earthier with a slight bitterness. For sweet dishes many people prefer pecans; for savoury dishes, walnuts.

Why are my walnuts bitter?

A little bitterness is normal and comes from the papery skin; paler, extra light kernels are the mildest. Strong, sharp bitterness with a paint-like smell means the nuts are rancid.

Are pecans grown in Kashmir?

No. Pecans sold in India are imported, mostly from the United States and Mexico. Here is which dry fruits are grown in Kashmir.
